Rule 1: Consonant Sound ('A')
- Used before singular countable nouns starting with consonant sounds.
- Example: He is a teacher at our school.
- Example: She bought a new pen.
Rule 2: Vowel Sound ('An')
- Used before singular countable nouns starting with vowel sounds (a, e, i, o, u).
- Example: She ate an apple.
- Example: He is an engineer in Kathmandu.
Rule 3: Phonetic Exceptions
- Sound matters over spelling letters.
- Example: A university student ('yu' consonant sound).
- Example: An honest person ('o' vowel sound).
Rule 4: Unique Objects ('The')
- Used before objects that are one of a kind.
- Example: The sun rises in the east.
- Example: The moon shines at night.
Rule 5: Superlatives & Ordinals
- Used before highest degree adjectives and ordinal numbers.
- Example: Mount Everest is the highest peak.
- Example: He is the best student.
Rule 6: Water Bodies & Ranges
- Used before mountain ranges, oceans, and rivers.
- Example: The Himalayas lie to the north.
- Example: The Kali Gandaki River.
Rule 7: Second Mention / Specific
- Used when the object is already known to the listener.
- Example: I bought a book. The book is interesting.
- Example: Please close the door.
Rule 8: Zero Article (Proper Nouns)
- No article before individual names, cities, and countries.
- Example: (x) Nepal is beautiful.
- Example: (x) Kathmandu is the capital.
Rule 9: Zero Article (Uncountable/General)
- No article before plural or uncountable nouns in general sense.
- Example: (x) Milk is healthy.
- Example: (x) Dogs are faithful animals.
Rule 10: Zero Article (Meals/Languages)
- No article before languages, meals, and days of the week.
- Example: We eat (x) lunch at 12:30.
- Example: She speaks (x) English well.
